CONTEST RULES

GENERAL RULES

Any project that fails to comply with any of these rules will be disqualified at the discretion of the Second Vice President and State Chair.
  1. Any Ohio secondary school may bring a delegation to the Convention. Only JCL Chapters and their registered Delegates may enter contests and win awards.

  2. Any Ohio secondary school may bring a delegation to the Convention. Only JCL Chapters and their registered Delegates may enter contests and win awards.

  3. Only JCL Delegates in attendance at the OJCL Convention may enter individual-effort contests. JCL Members not attending Convention may participate in the planning and construction of Club Contest entries, except for participating in the Skit performance at Convention.

  4. All entries, individual- or club-effort, should be created and/or performed by JCL members only. Sponsors and other adults should assume only the role of advisor to the completion of projects.

  5. All projects must exhibit some relation to the classics. Any project that does not adhere to this policy will be disqualified at the discretion of the OJCL Second Vice President and State Chair, and the Delegate's Sponsor will be contacted.

  6. Projects submitted in any previous OJCL Convention are not acceptable and will be disqualified. JCL Delegates must submit entirely new projects each year.

  7. It is expected that all entries in any contest will contain appropriate language. The Second Vice President and State Chair will immediately disqualify any project that is questionable, and the Delegate's Sponsor will be contacted.

  8. A Delegate's name, school, or other identifying marks must not appear anywhere on an entry. School names must not appear on Club entries with the exceptions of Club Banner and Club Scrapbook. Five points will be deducted from an entry's total score if identifying marks (name, school, etc.) are found on an entry.

  9. Of the club contests, only Club Scrapbook and Club Banner categories will be divided into large and small club divisions. (A small club is one with 35 members or fewer. A large club is one with over 35 members).

  10. The Modern Myth, Poetry and Cartoon contests are individual effort only (no group work), and only those JCL Members in attendance at Convention may win awards.

  11. A Delegate should attach to an entry a 3x5 card giving a brief explanation of the classical basis for the project. This is to help the judges better understand the point or message of the project.

  12. Absolutely no live animals will be accepted in projects. No perishable food items should be used in the completion of any project.

SPECIAL NOTES

Sponsor Discretion

Sponsor Discretion is encouraged and expected for all entries. JCL Delegates should be advised that as this is a statewide competition, entries in any category should be of high quality. Sponsors should be sure that all of their delegates have read, fully understand, and adhere to these Contest Rules before entering any contest.

Pre-Judging

All Graphic Arts categories having 40 or more entries will be pre-judged by a panel of at least three judges on Friday evening of Convention. The entries not eliminated in this pre-judging will be judged on Saturday following the normal judging process. These large categories will still be divided into either two or three levels at an appropriate point.

Computer Generated Materials

A computer may be used to process text or to prepare labels for a map, chart, etc. Images from the Internet or CDROM encyclopedias may be used as part of a poster, map, chart, etc. However, a project may not be completely generated by the computer, printed and submitted, except for entry in the Digital Imagery Contest. For instance, a poster may not be designed and created on the computer, printed and submitted as an entry. Students may not, for example, print a map off the computer and enter it in the map category. Absolutely no computer games or generated cartoons will be accepted. If you have any questions regarding these rules, please contact a State Chair.

Creative Arts Contests

Please be advised that JCL Delegates planning to enter any of the Creative Arts Contests (Dramatic Interpretation, Latin Recitation, Sight Latin Reading, English Oratory and Costume) will be required to pre-register for these contests prior to the Convention.
